Day 105 – Great Barrington HERO (2026)

Hiking the Appalachian Trail: A Humid Adventure

I'm embarking on a journey, my friends, and it's one filled with bugs, sweat, and unexpected encounters. Today's tale takes us to Day 105 of my Appalachian Trail adventure, where the heat and humidity become our constant companions.

A Swift Start

Rising early, I hit the trail by 6 a.m., eager to make the most of the day. A mere 3.5 miles brought us to a road crossing, where the magic of trail camaraderie shone. A kind soul named Riley offered a ride into Great Barrington, making our journey smoother. Resupplying at the grocery store and indulging in a hearty breakfast at the Great Barrington Bagel Company, we recharged both our devices and our spirits.

The efficiency of this leg of the journey is remarkable. It's a testament to the power of community support and the kindness of strangers. Personally, I find these moments of human connection to be the lifeblood of long-distance hiking. They remind us that we're part of something bigger, a shared adventure.

Nature's Challenges

As we ventured back onto the trail, the Housatonic River guided us through a flat mile, only to greet us with a steep climb. The humidity clung to my skin, turning my clothes into sweat-soaked rags. And let me tell you, there's nothing quite like the feeling of being mobbed by gnats while climbing a mountain.

In these moments, I find myself contemplating the resilience of the human spirit. Why do we subject ourselves to such challenges? Perhaps it's the allure of conquering the unknown, or maybe it's the promise of breathtaking views. Whatever the reason, these struggles become badges of honor, stories to be shared around campfires.

Wildlife Encounters

The trail offered more than just physical challenges. I nearly stepped on a snake, a reminder of the diverse wildlife that calls this place home. But the most startling encounter was yet to come. As I descended, a black bear sprinted across my path, offering a fleeting glimpse before disappearing into the woods. It's moments like these that remind us of our place in the natural world.

Pushing On

Despite the gnats, the heat, and the physical exertion, we pressed on. The final miles of the day brought a climb through a pine forest and a descent to the Shaker Campsite. My fellow hikers, Shooter and Birdie, decided to push further, and I found myself following their lead. It's in these moments that the spirit of camaraderie truly shines.

Reflections on the Trail

As I reflect on Day 105, I'm struck by the dichotomy of the trail. It offers both the beauty of nature and the harshness of physical challenges. It tests our endurance and rewards us with unique experiences. The Appalachian Trail is not just a hike; it's a journey of self-discovery, where every step brings new lessons and stories to cherish.

In my opinion, it's these unexpected twists and turns that make long-distance hiking so captivating. Each day brings a new adventure, and I can't wait to see what the trail has in store for us next.
