Emotional Goodbyes and Tough Choices: The Impact of the Clippers' Trade Involving Harden and Zubac

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Clippers have undergone a significant transformation, shifting from being the oldest squad in the NBA to embracing a younger lineup. This change was marked by the decision to trade away two key players from their starting roster: the 11-time All-Star James Harden and Ivica Zubac.

These two athletes had proven to be the most dependable and consistently available members of the team during their time with the Clippers. Letting them go was not part of the initial plan for the franchise. However, this all changed when the organization received what Lawrence Frank, the president of basketball operations, described as a "Godfather-type offer"—an irresistible deal from the Indiana Pacers for Zubac, followed closely by a request from the Cleveland Cavaliers for Harden.

Frank emphasized that the team's ambitions included not only immediate victories but also a vision for a brighter future. "Not only did we want to win today," he expressed, "we also need to build a quote-unquote better tomorrow."

However, this strategic move came at an emotional cost. Zubac, who had developed a deep connection with the Clippers after transitioning from the Los Angeles Lakers, had established career highs in performance last season and was recognized as one of the premier defensive big men in the league. As the longest-tenured active player on the roster, his departure resonated deeply with everyone involved.

The day before Zubac was traded, Frank had informed him of another team pursuing him aggressively, while secretly hoping that they wouldn't meet the Clippers' asking price. Ultimately, the Pacers did, leading to a heartfelt farewell. Zubac reached out to ask if he could visit the Clippers' practice facility one last time, which evolved into an emotional six-to-eight-hour gathering filled with goodbyes from teammates, coaches, and staff.

"There were a lot of tears," Frank recounted on Monday. "It's hard because we all know what Zu means to us." Adding to the emotional weight was the fact that Zubac's wife had just given birth to their first child.

"None of us felt right. He's a special guy," Frank remarked, highlighting Zubac’s ability to communicate honestly with teammates during challenging moments and take accountability when others might shift blame.

Harden, who is now 36, had engaged in discussions about the team’s future. He played a critical role in maintaining the team’s performance, especially during periods when Kawhi Leonard was sidelined due to injuries.

"James understands the business better than any player I’ve ever known. He exceeded all our expectations," Frank explained, noting that parting ways with him presented a dual opportunity to pursue current success while simultaneously nurturing a younger roster.

Following a challenging start to the season at 6-21, the Clippers have managed to climb to ninth place in the Western Conference, winning 19 out of their last 25 games leading up to Tuesday night's matchup against Houston.

"Kawhi was hurt and disappointed those guys aren't here, but he's also a great partner," Frank acknowledged. "He understands that to maintain sustainability, hard decisions must be made."

In return for Harden, the Clippers acquired two-time All-Star Darius Garland from the Cavaliers. Although Garland has been sidelined since January 16 due to a sprained right big toe, Frank reassured that while the injury has healed, he is still dealing with some residual soreness from prior left toe surgery, meaning his return to play does not yet have a set timeline.

"We’re very confident that by taking the time now, it’s going to give him a long runway," Frank stated. "We want to see him playing at a high level for an extended period."

Garland, who is a decade younger than Harden, signifies a fresh start for the Clippers, who have moved away from having eight players over the age of 30, including the recently traded 40-year-old Chris Paul.
