In their latest artistic renderings, Perkins&Will presents a bold reimagining of the Gastown waterfront railyard, north of the iconic Canadian Pacific building. The concept showcases a dramatic expansion of public transit and high-density development, creating a new urban landscape.
The visuals offer a glimpse of high-rise towers, expansive public spaces, and an enlarged transit hub within the railyard. What's unique is the ground-level perspective, a view not previously shared.
This concept is purely speculative, a design exercise to spark public imagination and discussion. It's not an official proposal, but a thought-provoking idea to inspire the City of Vancouver's formal planning process for the Central Waterfront District.
Perkins&Will's study explores the potential of a site that's already a vital transportation hub. Waterfront Station currently serves as the downtown terminus for various transit lines, yet the surrounding railyard has long been seen as a barrier between the city center and the waterfront.
The concept proposes spanning the railyard to create new development sites while enhancing transit operations. At its heart, an expansive outdoor concourse covered by a vast glass canopy, leading to SkyTrain, commuter rail, and regional rail platforms. It even accommodates potential high-speed rail services to Seattle and Portland.
Public transit connectivity improves, with better access to SkyTrain and Canada Line. The SeaBus terminal relocates to a new marine terminal, supporting ferry routes to Vancouver Island. Along the waterfront, the entire harbor edge opens up to the public, with a multi-level pier and accessible open spaces.
Beyond transit, the concept integrates new office and hotel towers seamlessly into the station precinct. It also includes a major civic and cultural hub, a 500,000 sq. ft. space beneath the western cluster of towers, housing institutions like the Canadian Centre for the Moving Image and the Vancouver Arts Theatre.
